Link Printer - Kiosk PC - Firefox

Important Update: The latest Firefox updates have discontinued all support for the MeadCo ScriptX plugin. If you are using Firefox ESR 52 currently, you can continue to use this by disabling automatic updates. If your version of Firefox is updated, you will need to change to the new printing method outlined below.

There are three pre-requisites you need to have completed before proceeding:

  1. You have created a Badge Pass Template. If you have not done so already, please view our Setting up Badge Pass Templates article.
  2. You have installed your printer onto your Kiosk PC. If you have not done so already, please view our Getting Started with Printing guide and install your printer.
  3. You have created a Kiosk profile in your WhosOnLocation account with a unique username, password and PIN number.

And there are three steps to linking your Kiosk PC to the printer you have installed:

  1. Turn off Advanced Printing for your badge pass.
  2. Set the default printer for your computer.
  3. Enable Silent Printing and configure the settings.

Turn off Advanced Printing

By default all badge passes have the Advanced Printing setting enabled, this allows the badge pass to be printed using the MeadCo ScriptX plugin.

As this method does not use the plugin, you will need to disable this setting in the badge pass.

Please Note: If you are using the same badge pass across multiple Kiosks or Sign In/Out Manager systems, you will need different badge passes when printing on Firefox or Internet Explorer.
  1. Go to the desktop application of WhosOnLocation.
  2. Go to Tools > Locations.
  3. Click View next to your location.
  4. Select Badge Passes from the left-hand menu.
  5. Click View next to your badge pass.
  6. Set Enable Advanced Printing to No.
  7. Click Save.

Your badge pass can now be printed in Firefox using silent printing.

Set Default Printer

You will need to set your printer as the default in the Windows control panel.

  1. Open the Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Go to Devices and Printers.

  3. Right-click your printer.
  4. Select Set as default printer.

Enable Silent Printing

You can now configure your printing settings and add the silent printing command to the browser.

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Go to Menu > Print...

  3. Click Page Setup...

  4. Set the Orientation to Landscape.
  5. Set the Scale to Shrink to fit Page Width.
  6. Enable Print Background (colors & images).

  7. Select the Margins & Header/Footer tab.
  8. Set the margins as follows:
    Top: 0.1
    Left: 0.1
    Bottom: 0.1
    Right: 0.2
  9. Set all Headers & Footers to blank.

  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Close on the print page.
  12. Enter about:config in the address bar.

  13. Right-click anywhere on the list and select New > Boolean.

  14. Enter print.always_print_silent.

  15. Click OK.
  16. Set the boolean value to true.
  17. Click OK.

Your badge passes will now print automatically from your Kiosk. Log into your Kiosk now and sign in a test visitor.
